CAMILLA

All of the servants' apartments were empty, sans the ones we and the other worker fairies were in. It made me wonder where the humans were allowed to sleep. I wasn’t sure I wanted to find out.

After the head housekeeper showed us to our quarters, we’d waited until just before midnight to gather out in the hall and make our way to Chrissy, as was planned originally.

Chrissy had warned us several times that her magic would need to be renewed daily, maybe even more, and there was no guarantee that the transformations would last a full twenty-four hours, but so far we all still had our wings in place. That was a good start.

“It’s time to go,” Billy whispered next to me.

I gave him a quick nod of acknowledgement as we followed the sounds of whispers down the hall to the others.

“Kind of creepy, if you ask me,” Rafe commented as we walked up. “Where are all the humans?”

My thoughts exactly, though I didn’t say them out loud.

“Let’s go,” Liam spoke softly. “Keep your eyes open for any patrolling guards.”

“I don’t think he has enough to spare for constant patrolling,” Rafe remarked.

“Especially if we keep killin’ ‘em off,” Billy chimed in.

“He has them all watching Evy, and himself,” Becca added. “When I left, there were two inside the dining room and two more guarding the suite.”

Liam shot her a look of confusion. “Why so many when she’s a shield herself?”

“Sounds like he’s wary.” All eyes darted to me in various levels of surprise as I simply shrugged. “If you think about it, she’s the only thing he can’t truly control, because he doesn’t have access to her mind unless she grants it. She’s not afraid of what he can do to her. That’s why he uses others to keep her in line.”

Everyone stared at me as though I had grown two heads, but in reality I’d realized he thought much like my mother did—like she used to.

My chest wanted to ache and my eyes wanted to burn, but neither reaction happened. My mother was gone, and I still felt entirely too conflicted about it. Sad, but not sad. Relieved, but not relieved. Angry, but not angry.

“I think you’re right,” Liam said as my eyes darted to his, and he bobbed his head to the side before addressing everyone else. “Stay close. We can’t leave Chrissy and Ian waiting.”

The halls were empty. No patrols, no whispers, just the echo of our steps filling the vacant space. It was as if the walls themselves stood silently by in fearful anticipation.

Our whispered strides followed Liam’s as he led us out behind the stables to the forest just beyond the sweeping meadow dedicated to the palace horses. The trees were denser here, harder to see through, easier to hide ourselves.

Chrissy and Ian popped out from the shadows the moment they saw us. Bruised half-moons darkened the area underneath Chrissy’s eyes, her usually vibrant green irises looking a little duller in this dim lighting.

“Looks like you all made it safely inside,” Ian remarked.
